Default 99 XJ Classic dash no gauges quit *UPDATE INFO*

Ok, my brother has a '99 Xj Classic and the dash quit.

No speedo, no tac, no gas gauge...

Any idea what to look for or what might be the issue?

It sounds to me like a fuse has blown. Check the fuse cover panel- it should list which fuse is for the gauge cluster.

If the fuse is good, there may be a bad ground or a connection come loose. You may have to pull the gauge cluster to find out for sure.

theres a wiring harness that corrodes behind it.

my 97 did this once, then fixed itself

the fix is to replace it

but you can buy some time by just cleaning it

Where is the dash ground wire located?

Replace the harness? or the dash cluster?

hit the top of the dash, or the bottom to the right behind the ignition key. If it comes back to life you have a loose plug behind the cluster.

went over and looked at it..

Only the Speedo and the gas gauge don't work.

Gas gauge either will read full or empty nothing in between and the gas gauge don't work at all..

Can't seem to find a bad fuse and NONE under the hood are labeled "Gauges"

Did the hit he dash, no change.

I know about 3 months back my brother pulled the cluster and cleaned connections.

Looks like that's what I'll be doing.

Just seems odd that no speedo and the gas gauge only reads full or empty..

I had a problem with the 2000 xj I had (main reason why I got rid of it). There are 3 TSB's on this. Call the dealer and get the info.. they might still have the repair kits in stock.

I've found 1 TSB that links right to this issue. But I was told that it's not covered regardless..

Talking to dealer now but they're, "less than helpful"..

Basically flat out told me he should have traded it in under the Cash For Clunkers Program..
