Default 99 Transmission info?

Hey guys, sorry im asking this dumb question but honestly I can't find an answer.. Tomorrow I might be picking up a 99 transmission to do the 4wd swap and I had a question as to how many plugs do they have? I know there is the nss and speed sensor (I think) but im not certain, I just wanna be sure I get all the wiring

The '98 and '99 AW4 should be the same, as far as wire harnesses (connectors) go. Just look at your '98. There should be two transmission speed sensors (input and output), a transmission range sensor (NSS), and a transmission control assembly (solenoids).

If you are going to install a transfer case on the transmission it needs a 4WD transmission case adaptor, which a 2WD tranny won't have.

Yeah im picking it up with the tc, but with the 2 speed sensors the nss and the trans control assembly there should be 4 cables then?

Yes.

When the harnesses snake over the tranny and up to the engine bay by the tranny dipstick tube you will only be dealing with two transmission harnesses/connectors. The Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) and the Transmission Control Assembly (TCA). These connect the transmission functions to the Transmission Control Module (TCM). The other connector there is called C107. It's got about 14 circuits running through it but not tranny circuits. Don't dick with it.

With a 2WD XJ, I hope the wiring in the tranny wiring I described has all the circuits you need. A circuit you may be missing is the transfer case mode light circuit (instrument cluster annunciation)

What transfer case are you installing?

You'll need to deal with the transfer case vent tube/hose which terminates near the tranny dipstick tube, and the front differential vent tube and vent valve which terminates at the firewall near your brake booster. Your existing AW4 should already have its vent in place, just reuse it. If you can, get the vent tubing along with the tranny/tc and front diff you're getting. Sometimes the vent fittings are a beach to find.
