98 XJ Moonroof Issues
Hey guys. New on the forum so please excuse any lack of forum know-how.
I just got a '98 XJ. From what I have been reading in the forums so far I am assuming my problem is with the pre-dealer installed moonroof (slides down along a bracket between roof and headliner and can also "vent" up in the back)
Before I bought the XJ I checked it out both opening it fully and venting it and it worked fine. Then I vented it today on a highway ride up in Alaska and it struggled to close. Every bump I hit I heard it rattling and I could not get it to re-open or close. I also can't get it to slide back along the track above the headliner. When I got back to my house I got out and looked at it. The back end of the glass and completely dropped below the top of the car. I tried pushing it back up and noticed that the passenger side of the glass was unattached from the moonroof track but the driver side is still attached. No luck getting it flush and the weatherstripping is useless as it is with the glass below the opening cut into the roof.
I checked the fuse but it was ok. Any other ideas as to why the back might have dropped down like and why it is not running at all? I have trash bags duct taped down right now to keep the rain out. The moonroof is:
SEKURIT -Saint-Cobain- 43 R - 005013 DOT 39 A23 M445
I have to get it fixed before the Alaskan winter. From what I was seeing I would be looking at around $900 to get the whole thing replaced in the shop. I also just moved up for the year and don't have a garage or tools to attempt the replacement myself (and the pulling the headliner down is a nightmare) but might attempt to find someone who does and replace it myself. I am considering sealing it permanently versus paying close to a grand to get it replaced any suggestions?

I was able to get the problem resolved. It was a combination of a mechanical and electrical problem. I pulled the battery and let it sit for a bit while looking a bit closer at the track. The passenger side was not sitting in the the track it needs to to be retracted by the motor. I reconnected the battery and by pushing the switch (It worked after pulling the battery) and using some muscle on the top of the window I was able to get it in the track and sitting flush with the opening again.
