Default 98 Parking Brake Button Broke

Read a lot about this fairly common problem. Seems the only option is to replace the whole assembly. My "J rod" pulled out as well and seems to be bent mostly straight. My question is, if I go to a junk yard and find the whole assembly, can I take it apart and just use the button, spring and J rod in my handle that's already in my Jeep? If so, what would I need to do to do that.
Thanks in advance for any help.

IF you still have the button, some decent glue will solve it. I was lucky enough to catch mine before it disappeared.

Same thing happened to me a few months back. If memory serves, it is a feature you can turn off and I did turn it off, I just don't remember how. Someone was nice enough to post the instructions in the post that I brought back from the dead.
