Hello all,

I have a wrecked 98 with a good engine in it only 130k. My current jeep is at 255k and the wrist pin is clicking so I'd like to swap the engine. I'm planning on taking the engine out of the 98 and placing it into the 97. I was having trouble finding info on this exact swap and was wondering what difficulties I might run into. From what I've read through so far I think it might just be a straight swap and plug in the existing harness and computer. Some years you need to swap the computer and the engine compartment wiring harness but I don't think that's the case with these two year. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

This is a direct swap. No problems at all. One of the easiest swaps.

So the swap went well this weekend. However now I'm fighting the transmission. I messed up and didn't realize the 98 trans was different then the 97. I've read this thread http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1053970 and I'm going to make the circuit board to take the 4 pulses down to 1 pulse from the rear speed sensor so the TCU can understand it. However I'm unsure which wires to hook it up to. Also in the engine compartment I have 6 pins in the wiring harness of the jeep and 8 pins from the transmission. Does anyone have a write up on how to wire those two plugs together with the 6 and 8 pins. Also does anyone know anything more or has done the circuit board to change the pulses?

Cant you used the old sensor?

 

The old sensor won't correctly read the rotor inside the transmission. In order to use the old sensor I'd have to swap the tail housing of the transmission and the rotor inside.
