Default 98 cherokee transmission issues

So i bought a an xj last week, as is. it doesnt shift at all, i had to roll it off the trailer. it doesnt even have the slightest kick when i move the gear shifter. only has park. ive tried putting it into 4lo and4hi no difference. ive check the bottom side of the tranny to see if the shift lever was disconected, evrything seems to be all together but no response from the tranny at all.ive also disconected the tcm im stuck, i dont want to have to buy a new one if i dont have to.

Not sure if you're trying to say it can't or it can be electrical issues. If it can't, why not? I'm thinking that you need to check fuses and the TCM as suggested earlier and let us know the results. Also, are you getting any codes? If so, please post them as well.

Here's a good article on the AW4 and troubleshooting procedures:

If the linkage is connected properly AND your fluid level is correct, the transmission should move you forward in 1-2 even with the TCU disconnected.
If it doesn't you have internal problems of some sort. Your guess is as good as mine exactly what, could be a bad TC, failed pump, you name it.
It's almost certainly going to be cheaper to swap in a working, used trans. than to have someone repair yours, unless you can do the labor yourself.

For the '98, the TCM fuses are F16 (IOD) in the PDC and F11 in the JB.
