98 Cherokee Sport Misfire/ Rough Idle
So the other day my sport started acting and running funky after i let it idle for about 15 minutes on a trail, started to sound like a "cammed" v8 so i hoped in and rev'd it to clear it out. misfire/ broke up each rev then cleared itself out. Shut it off for about 20 minutes and tried to start it up and it would not start at all... just cranked and popped and had a mean stutter and then eventually it fired right back up.
i did plugs, wires, cap, rotor, cleaned the TB and the IACV and new battery and it still does it. no CEL or pending codes, motor runs quiet when it actually is running correct. Thanks for any input! and sorry if i ranted a little bit, it is my daily and it is stressing me out lol

1. Check the spark plugs for cracks around the ceramic. This will cause a misfire due to the ceramic not holding a charge. And make sure the spark plug gap is .035
2. Make sure the plug wires are in the correct firing order here is a diagram to show the correct firing order
That's about as much as I know. I hope this helps and if not, at least I tried.

Plenty of people have experience, be patient.
whats your fuel pressure have you tested it?
A 97-01 XJ should have 49PSI @ Idle at the fuel rail, plus or minus 5PSI.
Your issues may stem from a low fuel pressure. Go to advanced auto and rent or buy a gauge.

Did you notice any problem with overheating when it idled for 15 minutes?
The CPS and the TPS are both very susceptible to going bad if they are overheated. Even if the engine didn't overheat, it can get pretty hot under that hood when the vehicle isn't moving.
Testing the TPS is easy and free. You might want look at that.
And stop firing the parts cannon!
