I think the torque spec is around 23 ft-lb. Yes, there is a pattern. If you can't find it, start in the center and work outward, alternating sides.

Just a tip on head changes, I found it easier to put the manifolds onto the head out of the engine bay. It makes it a little heavier but worth it to avoid the agrivation of trying to torque things up bent like a pretzel.

Torque specs for the head
That's what I have in the FSM for the 98 XJ.

Imagine front of the head is to the left, top view: bolts would be numbered 12, 8, 4, 1, 5, 9, 13 (top row) and 11, 7, 3, 2, 6, 10, 14 (bottom row).
Follow the sequence in order (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc.), so you start in the middle.
Loctite 592 or equivalent on bolt 11.
Torque 1 thru 14 at 22 ft. lbs.
Torque 1 thru 14 at 45 ft lbs.
Torque 1 thru 10 to 110 ft lbs
Torque 11 thru 13 to 100 ft lbs
Torque 12 thru 14 to 110 ft lbs

Torque specs for intake/exhaust

Looking at the exhaust/intake:
Top row:
Bolts 9, 8, 3, 10, 11
Bottom row:
Bolts 6, 4, 2, 1, 5, 7
Torque in sequence (1, 2, 3, etc.)
Bolts 1 thru 5 to 24 ft lbs
Bolts 6 and 7 to 23 ft lbs
Bolts 8 thru 11 to 24 ft lbs.
