Default 98 Cherokee Service light fix

Well, It's time for a NY State inspection. I'm going in for back surgery but need my Jeep. It has a service light on and I think there is a quick fix. There is nothing wrong that I could find without killing my back. So, if I start the Jeep and disconnect the positive cable with it running for about 5 minutes and then hook up the battery again. Will the light go out. Then do I drive it for about 50 miles and it will stay off for awhile? I just need to get it inspected before I have surgery, then I can try to figure it out. Needless to say, I do not have the money to take it to a garage. I have done it before but can't be sure of the steps. Can anyone give me a tip, It would be a huge help. I do not have access to a code reader. Really will be appreciated.
Thanks

Try this... worked for me... with Jeep off, not running....

UPDATE: I did some research and learned about what is referred to as "adaptive memory", i.e. that after changing parts, including the fly wheel I just did, the computer has to re-learn parameters using the new part. After having cleared probably 15-20 misfire codes post flywheel change, I performed what multiple sites and people said to do. That is re-set the adaptive memory. Remove the positive battery cable and touch it to a ground for 30 seconds or so. Put the cable back and turn key to ON position, turn headlights on briefly then off. Turn key off. Supposedly this drains the capacitors in the ECM with the lights being the final pull of current... this clears adaptive memory and the vehicle is back to factory pre-sets and re-learns with the new fly wheel in my case over the next 50 starting cycles. Since doing that 2 weeks back I have not had a misfire code at all when before it was not uncommon to have 4 a day. Is this smoke and mirrors? Works according to my experience here.

The advice in the post above doesn't seem relavant, he cleared a code after correcting the problem. You are trying to clear a code without fixing it. You can get a free read on your 98 at most auto parts stores. You really need to know the code, there is very little you can learn about a check engine light by just looking around. Get creative and get that code.

Ny does free CEL checks at most advance autos and auto zones. Legally, though, they cant clear the codes for you especially if emission related. When they hook you up, just because a CEL is off, it is stored in the jeeps computer.
