will a 96 ecm work in a 98?i just replaced the coil, alternator, and ecm on my xj and now the gauges wont work.the computer came out of a mint condition perfectly running 96.does it matter what side of the coil the ground wires go onto it to mount to the block?the jeep will run and drive fine but nothing on the dash will move.the oil pressure gauge moves the smallest amount but thats all.any help would be greatly appreciated.

I read this somewhere that it worked for atleast one person lol.

"Disconnect the CPS and see if your gauges come back. If they do, get a new CPS from *the dealership*, not aftermarket.

What I suspect happened- and this is a longshot guess- is the bad alternator created a low voltage condition, leading a handful of sensors to set codes, which you replaced with aftermarket sensors, creating another layer of problems. In particular the aftermarket CPS' are spotty at best."

Not correctly. The '96 gauges still read directly, '98 are buffered through the PCM.

The coil mounts next to the block, then the ground cable. Make sure everything's clean and tight, that's an important ground connection.
