got a 98 cherokee that i had replaced the battery last nite cause it had gone dead, replaced it and start it up! however, when i turn it off and try to turn back on it cranks but does not turn over til a few more times. this morning took me a couple of times to get it started. any ideas what problems i might have?

Can you hear the fuel pump priming?

 

check the "cps" crankshaft position sensor that may be your culprit

 

i suspected it was that but no i dont hear anything. i will give it a go on the cps. are they hard to replace?

 

Dont go throwing parts at it, the cps is only one of many possible things. You should be hearing the fuel pump, so you should still be looking there, or at least something fuel related.

Edit: you should check for spark also, but since it is eventually starting I am not sure that would be your issue.
