97 xj towing...then check engine came on . . Code p0700
heres a new one guys . i have a stock 97 xj with 150k on it . i use it on occasion to pull firewood and it does great. yesterday i used it to drive 2 hours and pick up a bunch of stuff to help someone move, i would say 600lbs of stuff. the trailer dry is 650 , so right around 1200 lbs, which is any easy load for her since shell do 2500+ for firewood .
anyways , it was 93 outside (no tranny cooler) , and all of a sudden my check engine light comes on . the next thing i notcied right away was my gas gauge going down a low quicker than normal . it was about 1/4 tank when the light came on, and after only 25 min of driving it was at empty!
on that one tank of gas , i got 215 miles... and i usually get 315 ....minus a little bit when im towing. thats 12mpg ! it drove perfectly normal it seemed, i still had overdrive and shifted fine . so i putted it in the back roads to my hometown.. no big hills either.
so i brought it up to autozone and they hooked it up to the brain and it came back P0700 , transaxle control system fault. explanation: ECM received a signal that the transaxle control module has a fault. which it states its either a shortened open circuit within transaxle or control module failure. i think a new module is 270$ . which would stink to buy but ill do what i have to do . im going to drive it today and see if the gas mileage is still bad.
autozone told me to go to a real mechanic and have em hook it up to their pc and see what exact tranny codes are comin up . the code P1898 came up also, but thats a honda code so who the hell knows whats wrong.
i looked on this site ,and everyone that had a P0700 code also had a p0705 and was told to pull and clean their NSS switch . but they also complained about no reverse lights and their overdrive wasnt working ... mine was fine , driving normal .
so what you think?

ya i solved the problem, i sold the car... 5 years ago!
i loved that XJ... still was my favorite to own.
cant remember what went wrong but from the looks of it resetting the ECM worked fine since i dont remember having problems after that.

Regardless thanks for the response. I've been chasing the issue since I bought it two months ago. Replaced everything except the trans at this point lol. So many people post about this issue but nobody ever follows up with how they fixed it, maybe someone in one of the other 6 posts about this will respond with jiggle the yellow wire or some such bs and solve my issue haha
