I'm in the UK, so the lighting set up on my '98 XJ is different to those in the US. Over here, the side markers don't ever light up - they're just reflectors, and also the turn signals only light up when signalling.
I think the US ones looks cooler, so I was wondering if anyone could answer some questions about the standard set up.

1. Do the turn signals and side markers light up whenever the parking lights/headlamps are on?
2. Do the turn signals and side markers both flash when you're signalling? Do they flash at the same time or alternate?

1, Yes they are one while the headlights are on.
2, The front ones under the head lights and the side ones do flash alternatively when signaling/When Hazards are on.
