97 XJ consumed full tank of gas in 80 miles!
Postin this for a fellow XJ owner having trouble on the road. Any ideas what can be causing it to use up that much fuel?

I doubt you are really getting 5.3MPG.
I would think you have a leak or a faulty fuel gauge. Or you are trying to tow a REALLY heavy trailer.

That is about 4 mpg. I would at a minimum expect visible black smoke from the exhaust, especially under moderate acceleration if it's really burning that kind of gas.
I'd bet leak.

Im posting this for a friend that is traveling. Im going by what he told me over the phone. He said he pulled a spark plug and it was fouled very bad.

Well damn, everyone knows heading east on HWY 10 kills the gas mileage, I can hardy believe you posted this now that I know that!
the guys got a bad fuel line, share the knowledge..........the engine cant consume that kind of fuel, not even on HWY 10......heading East!

Well. If the plugs are really fouled, He's got a problem. If I had time, I'd start by checking if the O2 sensors were working, or that the air intake wasn't totally clogged by something.

Maybe I should of express my self a little better. I was replying to someone suggesting that the fuel was being siphoned while the XJ was parked. The excessive fuel consumption took place while on the HWY! When I last spoke to my buddy, he told me it was traced to a faulty O2 sensor. Thank for all the replies(even the smart *ss ones).

Well like they say,its better to be a smart *ss than a dumb *ss I guess!
