96 XJ 4.0HO dies randomly when in gear...
It just started doing this I is an auto and it will die randomly, usually when I am on the brake at a stop... it will just sputter like it is out of gas, then I put it in neutral... it tried to start, but just sputtered... then put it in park and it fired right up...
ideas?

well let's see, less than 3000 miles ago it got the following... cap, rotor, plugs, wires, fresh ground wires, fuel pump, fuel filter... tank was also cleaned out...
I WISH THAT WAS THE ISSUE
this started today with the cold... I think that my fuel gauge might be reading higher than it really is, it happened with low-ish fuel sitting on a slight grade with the front of the car toward the top of the grade...
the first time it did it today I had been idling for around 45-60 mins... then I took off and it did it on the way up the first hill I went to... I started to pull over, coasting in drive and the engine roared to life, the fuel was a little low... I put fuel in it and did not have an issue until after I finished my running
it also happen in the drive through at Mickey Dee's... threw it in neutral and tried to start it, it tried to start but just acted like it was not getting fuel... then threw it in park and it fired right up...
maybe neutral safety switch?

I had a similar issue. When my gauge was reading 1/4 tank or less. And I went around a left hand turn I would stall out sometimes. Keeping above 1/4 tank and never had the issue again. Could be coincidence..but can't rule it out.
