Default The 96 fuel pump problem

For refrence I have a 96 xj 4.0 5 spd.

I had noticed I smelled gas around the back of my jeep when I got a full tank. when i investigated it I found that the fuel pump assembly had rusted to the point of leaking. the pump and regulator are fine, but the assembly is rusted and leaking. So far I have not been able to find just the assembly and what i have found has been incredibly expensive ( on a college student budget). Would it be possible for me to use the assembly from a 95 or somthing and put my pump and regulator on it? there has got to be a better way than spending $200 on parts I dont need.

No other option as of today. Some have tried adapting other year systems but seems we never hear if it's been successful.

The replacement assemblies haven't been available for very long so even though they are expensive it could be worse if the didn't exist.

Best price I've found so far:

Some prices were well over $200. Mines a '96. I hate talking about these things. Afraid I might jinx mine.

Read this thread in its entirety for more information on our lovely '96 fuel pumps.

There are a lot of possibilities, but if it were me I'd replace the entire assembly; otherwise, you'll just be working on it again.

when you say "investigated", what did you find?

i have a similar problem, when full i can smell fuel from the back. i figured it was a bad o-ring but now you have me wondering. for now I just fill it up up until it's midway or slightly over the half mark, but i'm expecting to have to dig into that sooner or later.

By investigated I mean I went under and looked at it when I had a full tank and i could see where it was leaking through the assembly. The one nice thing about a 96 is you dont have to drop the tank to work on the fuel pump. That is, if you can find a fuel pump.

No problem finding one, and you can get them for under $200.

Here's one for $150 with free shipping:
