Default 96 exhaust question.

Hopefully a quick question, but we'll see.

Stock 96, as far as I know, but it appears the exhaust manifold has been worked over at some point. It appears to be a header, unless the I6 came like this?

But my question is, what's up with that HUGE friggen muffler? I've never seen one so big. Stock, right? It's quiet, very quiet. I prefer a throaty sound, and velocity improvements.

Any recommendations?

Other than sound, what would be the advantage of replacing the muffler? Suggestions on which one I should get?

And what about the cat?

Thanks!

The exhaust manifold looks normal. Maybe it has been replaced, but hard to tell from the pictures. Look for cracks on the neck of the collector, where the two pipes blend into one. Original manifolds tend to crack there (usually caused to engine vibrations from worn engine and transmission mounts).

The muffler looks like a stock Walker replacement. Overall your exhaust looks good, unless you think the catalyst is clogged and taking away power.

I can't recommend a throaty muffler but maybe another member can.

Also, your Jeep looks incredibly rust free. Excellent.

Thanks. I agree it's amazingly rust free. The body is the same. I have a leaking valve cover gasket which I'm gonna address very soon

How do I test the cat, and can it be eliminated? I don't want to throw off the O2 sensor or anything. The truck runs fine, with just a little piston slap at a cold startup. Much less than you would expect at 313,000 miles.

But I do wish it was a little more throaty. LOL!

Any discussion of eliminating or modifying cats is forbidden on this site. It's illegal, and the owners don't want to be in the position of facilitating discussion of illegal activities.

(But it's not hurting your performance anyway, unless it's gone bad.)

As for testing it, other than thumping it with a rubber mallet and listening for rattling (it shouldn't rattle), I don't know. Mebbe a quick search will turn up something useful.

Cool, I wouldn't want to discuss anything illegal. To be honest, I don't know much about them anyways, so I just learned something.

And Fel-Pro it is!

Wasn't this rule revised recently?

Not that I know of, but maybe I missed something. I can't imagine why it would be, as it's still illegal to remove cats.

Ouch....bad question on my part, I'm sure. I just wanted to know my options without breaking the bank. I see this is NOT one of them.

I just went and did a whole bunch of research on cats, and now I see there is NO (real) advantage for removing them. If I have a need for flow, it's cheap enough to get a less restrictive cat. The one on my truck has an air inlet, but it's not connected. I'll check that when the sun is up tomorrow, and determine why that is. I want the system to be complete.

So, I'm back to just the muffler. Suggestion there, from anyone? LOL!!!

I have driven Camaros for years with no cats and glass packs or flow masters. No cats smells bad, gas smell at idle all the time. If you are going for performance, install a hi flow cat. After listening to all that noise, I say stick with stock. You don't want to hear that noise, all day, everyday.
