Unhappy 96 cherokee sport 4x4

We have a 96 Jeep Cherokee that we bought this year.It ran fine then all of sudden it started to back fire and getting hot.We have changed the fuel filter.Anymore suggestions?

All it does is back fire and run hot? Got a check Engine light? 96 is OBDII so the auto store can check it for you.

Sounds like its running rich, probably an o2 sensor or MAP sensor

Could be running lean. It will cause a backfire and running lean; not rich can also cause it to run hot
