The blocks are the same but some of the accessories might be different. You may have to swap some stuff from your xj 4.0 to the zj but everything should bolt right up to it.

Would the auto transmition be the same or compatible. I dont know to much about cars but i check with a jeep manager and he said im good to go with having a compatible match. The guy fixing it said yesterday his partner messed up something with wrong transfer case and he had to pull motor back out. Today its my transmission thats wrong and needs to have another mechanic change something so they fit right and wants to charhe me 50% more. Is he right or is he running a scam. Thanks

I thought that only the early years (1992-1993) of the ZJ had the AW4 (Aisin-Warner) transmission that is used in all automatic XJs. Later part of 1993, the ZJ switched to Chrysler transmissions.
Transfer case should not need to be messed with for a motor change. Only if the transmission is being swapped.

You are in the right place! No problem! I was just providing more info on the engine issues! I'm sorry if that came across as if you weren't in the right place.
