Default 96 Cherokee AC Fan

Recently lost low and mid speed on my fan. Only works on high. I have read several posts and they seem to point to a relay behind glove box, motor resistor pack and or theven motor itself. Noticed that when I do put fan to high much voltage needle drops significantly and don't recall it doing that when all three speeds worked. Would that symptom help in choosing which fix at which I may need ? I am going without AC because my battery bit thearly dust. Autozone said alternator is good. Don't know if the high speed fan amp draw I noticed could have caused it. Don't want to run AC unail I find out. Any advice appreciated cause it's triple digits. Perhaps someone could watch their volt gauge and switch fan to high to compare draw. Mine sits touching the left edge of the 14 mark and drops about half way when I hit high fan.

Fan off

Fan high

resistor is right, replace that and you'll be good to go.

as for the power draw, probably the battery or alternator on its way? how long have you had them, were they replaced at all?

Will bad resistor be visibly bad ? I just removed it and all the little resistor Coils look good. I want to go ahead and replace relay as well since I'm under there. Is it above the motor.. behind glove box ? Can't seem to locate

i also have a 96 and honestly i can't really tell the location of the relay (or if there is any?). we fall in that category where we have obdII but not the newer body style with probably different fuse/relay panels.

if you find out i'd be interested to know as well. but i think it wouldn't switch on at all if it was the relay, not 100% sure though.

if you have the time you could simply go buy a new one from any parts store, try it out in their parking lot, and simply return it if it doesn't fix the problem. i think it was like 10-15$ anyway.

98 jeep limited same issue with fan , I was told the pig tail ( wire and clip ) is hard to get , so I did some research and there is a corvette pigtail that will also work and is more heavy duty so it won't melt in . Hope this helps someone I will post the part number

The draw you are seeing is perfectly normal......it's the gauge.

The HVAC blower doesn't have a relay in the '96 XJ. Only '97 & above.

The Thermal Fuse probably melted (internally). Common problem with low airflow in the blower chamber. The fuse will melt at around 149*C and you can't tell by looking at it. The Thermal Fuse is that bullet shaped tube in the middle of the resistor coils.

If you replace the Resistor Block and the same thing happens again, suspect a defective blower or crap in the blower chamber restricting airflow.
