Hi all, my son bought a 1996 2wd 2dr 4cyl manual jeep Cherokee last week and it had a few problems, but worst is it died yesterday. It has gas and cranks but dies not fire. I plugged my code reader in and get an err1 code which is no signal according to the reader manual. That makes sense if the chilton manual is right that there are no obd2 codes for a 96 4 cyl. Though the odb2 was powering up and reading with the key off which seems odd. Any idea where I should start? He can't afford a mechanic so he and I will have to fix it. I think a CPS is a good start then an ECM, but is there a way to test either of those? Once I get it running I will attach the death wobble over 55

 

Got spark? If not, is there power to the + coil terminal?

It's just me so I can't test spark. I went ahead and changes the CPS with a NAPA one and that was not it. I'll have to get someone to see if I have spark later. I know the previous owner changed the wires and cap fuel pump and tank.

 

get someone to give you a hand, because that will narrow things down a lot quicker than replacing the parts one by one till you nail it.

Or take the plugs out and tie to a cat with wet paws. Crank engine. If cat purs, you have no or weak spark. If it goes MAAOWWWW, you have good spark.
