im kinda new to jeeps so i dont know much about them my father always told me to buy one if i wanted to go play in the woods so i did anyway to the point
i have a 95 cherokee 4.0 not sure if its a xj or what it was hit in the front rebuild ( like ****)
i have a 85ish cherokee aswell that is up for parts are the transfur cases compatable or is it easyer to start calling junk yards to find one ? i belive i have the 213 tcase atleast thats what the rear end says any input would be helpful and soon please as this is my only truck atm and i can afford to have it freeze up on me driving down the road or out in the woods for that matter

 

The 85 is probably a V6 2.8L (ugh, I just threw up a little in my mouth), so no, it's not compatiable with the 4.0. You'll need a transfer case out of a 4.0L equipped XJ (any year). You should have the NP or NV231 in there, I don't think there is such a thing as a 213.

 

yea i kinda just learned that calling the junk yard lol so any year 4.0 t case will work ? the splines are all the same ?

 

you can only use a transfer case out of a 94 and newer cherokee because in 94 they switched from 21 spline to 23 spline. you also need to measure your output shaft length to make sure it is the same. they came in 3 different lengths

 

idk i know advanced auto just told me they have a used one for 80 bucks for a 95 4.0 i didnt know parts stores like that had used parts 2 im kidna iffy on that one

 

now heres the question the parts store i talked to said they have a 231 or a 231j ?

 

look at your tag it should be a 231j

AFAIK the difference between the NP231 and NP231J is that one has a J on it, signfying it was made for Jeep. I believe they are otherwise the same unit. I may be wrong.
