There is a temp sending unit ontop of the head on ds near the back. When that goes bad the temp guage stops. They are like $15 at parts store.Be careful when replacing it.Its hollow brass and will break fairly easy.

I replaced mine recently for the same reason BUT I got the part from Autozone and it reads exactly 1/4 of the gauge higher than it should (normal operating temp shows just below the red)
Also, make sure the sensor has continuity and changes resistance when you breathe hot air on it. The first couple sensors they gave me were wrong/bad. They had a slightly different single connector pin and did not read were open between the pin and case. I have to find someone else with a good one and replace it. even though I know its not overheating, I still find myself starring at the gauge a lot.
