pull the distributor cap and have someone hit the key, if it spins the timing chain didn't break.

Won't work on the computer controlled coil. It the pcm is constantly looking for a return signal voltage from the coil. Plus I'd personally never hotwire something that produces 150,000 volts, but that's just me.

touché.... most of my mechanical experience is with pre-computer engines.

If it spins over like there are no spark plugs in it, then there may not be any compression. OR the valves are not opening or, especially, closing.

Which might indicate a broken timing chain. Maybe pull the valve cover and see if the valvetrain is moving properly.

I don't know if a Jeep engine is an interference fit or not, but I'm sure somebody on here knows.

Actually the 95 OBD1 Does have key codes, You cycle the key 3 times and count the blinks of the check engine light.
