Default 95 cherokee 2.5L gauge swap

I have a 95 cherokee 2.5l with a 5 speed. Currently have the speedo with dumby lights. Im looking to swap in a set of full gauges fromwork a differentgood cherokee. Now before someone says search, i have. What i have found is i need a 91-96 cluster.the problem is most cherokee writeups, and cherokees, are the 4.0l. On the writeups they need to swap the rear oil sending unit and the temp sending unit as well. My questions are the ones i can not find. First will the gauge cluster for the 4.0l work when i put it in the 2.5l. Mainly the tach, as it did not come with one to begin with. Since its electric and not mechanical like earlier years, will the 2.5 or 4.0 not make a difference in the tach? And second is do i still need to swap the same sending units, and are they in the same locations?

Any help is appreciated, and preferably from someone who has done the swap on the 2.5l.

Thanks guys.

From what I have read, I do not think the temp and oil pressure senders are any different. From a quick check on rockauto.com, the 2.5 and 4.0 use the same oil pressure sender unit. There are also matching part numbers for the coolant temp sender.

If I remember correctly, the tachometer works off the crank position sensor and is electrically driven. There is no separate hookup for a tachometer and Jeeps that don't have one originally will have a working tach with the swap.

Cool beans, man! I just bought a gauge cluster on eBay for my Jeep. I'll go scavenge the sending units, most likely.

Haha! I didn't run that one up, but I did see it happen! Nah, I found one from a guy that wanted $65. Offered him $40 and he was really cool about helping out a fellow gearhead. $52 shipped. It will be here on Tuesday. Just in time for me to get back from the mountains!

I'm not sure if the tach will work right or not. I would assume it will actually work but it won't read anywhere close to right unless you find a tach cluster out of another 2.5 Jeep, just based on past experience with other vehicles.
I am curious about the tach though, if it does work I'd love to swap clusters in mine to have a tach (I've also got the 2.5, but I have every gauge except the tach in my stock cluster).

I believe i read since the 91-96. models are electronic they get thier info from the cars ecu, so the tach should work reguardless of engine size. Thats what im hoping for as well since its already being shipped lol. Ill let you guys know by sometime next week.

Ok so looks like everything worked out! Installed the new cluster from a 91-96 cherokee 4.0L. Tach and speedo look good. Found the oil and coolant temp sending units at orielys. They are mounted the same way on the 2.5 as on the 4.0. Only issue i ran across is i have a driver side airbag in the steeringwheel. Had remove the steering column shrouds. There are 3 torque screws on the underside that hold it in place. You will need a #20 torque screwdriver. The screws are in deep holes so a regular tip on a wrench will not fit. This steering wheel also seems harder to remove and install the cluster and dash trim then a non airbag equipped model.

So to answer anyone elses question that searches any 91-96 cherokee gaugue cluster will fit another 91-96 cherokee reguardless of motor size or what gauges were there or missing before or after.
