I once had a '68 Mustang that would do this. Ford C-4 transmission.

I would go into reverse immediately. I would back down my driveway, put it in drive, run the engine at high idle, and coast down the street until it finally would pull itself forward.

The neighbors probably thought I was an extra-careful driver watching out for kids and dogs running out in front of me.

Did it this way for 4 years. The transmission shop told me the bands were worn and the transmission need to come out and be rebuilt. I didn't have the $325.00 to do it. When I sold the car, I did tell the buyer what it did. We took some off the selling price. I think he went the next day and had it rebuilt.

I miss those days when tranny diagnosis was fairly easy. Now that they are electronic just a bad connection can shut you down. The more complicated a system becomes the more things that can go wrong.

Default Update

OK quick update. I took my '93 XJ and unplugged the transmission control module and saw how it drove and it would start off slow and slowly build speed with no noticable shifting but otherwise got up to speed right off from sitting all night. This morning I unplugged the module in my '94 XJ which is the one that's had the problem this thread is about and it acted and drove exactly the same as the '93. Started off slowly and slowly built up speed without a high RPM. Before from a cold start in the morning you could floor it and the RPMs would go high but you'd still be going 10-15 MPH.

So this is telling me the problem with the '94 trans not shifting until it warms up is related to some sort of sensor or electrical plug or something affecting the trans control module. I have swapped TCMs with no effect so that isn't it.

It might be a lazy transmission out put speed sensor. The OSS plays a big roll in transmission shift points and torque converter engagement points.

Can anyone give me a quick photo or diagram where the OSS is on a '94? I'm in a junkyard right now so can try grabbing one. Thanks
