Default 94 xj cranking but no fire

Hey everyone. I have a 94 xj. Yesterday I drove it to work fine, then I went to leave, started up fine. Backed it up 2 feet, drove it 2 feet, and it shut off. Tried to start it up, and it just kept cranking. Pulled a wire off The spark plug, tested to see if there was a spark when cranked, there was not. Replaced the CPS thinking that was the issue because the old CPS tested bad. Went to start it up again, just kept cranking. Fuel pump turns on. Tried putting my foot to the floor, nothing. Ideas? Thanks in advance

Check for:

  1. Pulsed 12v to the coil while cranking. You'll need a test light or voltmeter. Test light might be better for this. If that's good, next:
  2. Spark coming out of the coil into the distributor. If that's good, next:
  3. Pop open the distributor and see what you see. Is the rotor intact?

If you have nothing in step 1, take a look at your neutral safety switch for starters. There is also a CPS (Cam Positioning Sensor) in the distributor that can go bad.

1. Yup, first thing is to check for codes. If any, post the exact code here for comment.

2. Testing of the ignition coil is probably next up, barring any codes. The coil can easily be tested for both primary and secondary resistances with a manual and a meter.

3. You could also try swapping the ASD relay in the PDC, power distribution center (black box) under the hood with another relay. These relays are the same part number so swapping is not an issue. More on how spark works on the XJ below.

Good luck and keep us updated!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Spark: 12 volts from ignition switch to the ASD relay; when the key is first turned on the PCM provides a ground to the ASD relay to energize it, then the ASD relay passes 12 volts to the coil primary side. If no crank sensor signal is generated after a couple of seconds the PCM cuts the ground to the ASD relay (and fuel pump relay too) and that cuts power to the coil (and fuel pump). Key to START and once again the PCM energizes the ASD relay. Now, a critical element is the crank sensor--no signal from the crank sensor and the PCM won't trigger the coil to provide spark.
