Default 94 cherokee transfer case bang 4 lo now wont start

I recently did a motor swap and put a 96 block into the 94 Cherokee I bought. It runs and shifts fine. It moved down the highway excellent for about an hour total in 2hi. I had tested 4hi before and it works. Today I decided to try out four lo and it was a major failure...lol.

I started the jeep and put the transmission in neutral. I then put the transfer case into 4lo and barely touched the gas. It moved forward about 6 inches and then made a loud "bang" sound then started grinding so I shut it off immediately. The grinding was like not using the clutch on a 5 speed but a lot quieter. It may have slipped out of 4lo but now I have a bigger issue..

After I did that I put the transmission back in park and the transfer case in 2hi. I then tried to start it again to see if it would move and the motor won't crank and the starter doesn't even try to turn the motor. It's like the nss isn't letting it start but everything was fine until I tried to use 4lo.

After it wouldn't start, since I had a ground issue at the battery before, I redid the ground at the battery...that's not the issue... neither is the battery.

Then I decided to force the motor to start and put the key on run and jumped the starter terminals...it started just fine then and stayed running until I turn the key off. Before I shut it off I tested 2hi and 4hi and it will move back and forth without any issues. I then shut it off and tried to start it with the key...nope..it will not start with the key at all.

I don't really wan't to try 4lo again until I get some advice from the forum. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Edit: TCASE is an NP231 with 191k miles

Finally got to adjusting the shifter linkage two days ago..4lo works fine now. Still don't know why it would not let me start it after this happened.

When you turn the key on do all the lights on the dash come on like normal? Are you getting power to the starter when turning the key?

Sounds like it could be a bad connection at battery..

Ant...

Nah that is all fixed. Just updating the thread for future people who might see it. It must have been a safety thing keeping everything off.
