Dropped my Jeep in a pretty deep hole. Next day I start her and see the CEL is on. Battery is not charging. Start checking stuff out and everything looked okay. I revved it up pretty good and all of a sudden it started charging. After that it was hit or miss on charging.

So I went and got a Grand Cherokee Alt and put on and it was charging up over 14. Went to a big ride this weekend and about an hour in it was acting up. It would charge and then not charge and then eventually just quit charging all together. Checked all grounds and there seems to be good resistance between the points that are being grounded. Tried grounding the alternator case straight to frame. Tried running power wire directly from alternator to battery. No luck.

Some things I see says the regulator is in the computer, others say that its in the alternator and the computer just controls it. Which is it? Computers common problem?

 

What year is your xj? If I remember correctly obd II models are computer regulated but I'm not positive

 

1993. Not obd2 but not renix.

 

Hmmmm. Maybe a short somewhere in the wiring
