93 xj 4.0 HO, picked it up recently in trade for a honda shadow. replaced cps because it wouldnt start once warm, fixed that issue. new plugs wires and cap, drove it 50 miles no problem. However trying tp drive arpund today presented a random shutoff issue. only made it out my neighborhood so temperature is irrelevant i believe. seems to shut off mainly around 1500 roms when accelerating, also steering seems to have an impact. i can rev it to the moon when in park or neutral, and while driving it accelereates fine. idle roms are lower than i like, and sounds liuke it wants to stall if im braking and turnong. alot of info some unrelated, however to be clear main problem i want to address is the stalling. if i try to start it, it only cranks, HOWEVER it starts right back up everytime if i turn the key OFF than start again. must mean something albeit idk what.

You say it shuts off at 1500 rpms when accelerating. You then say while driving it accelerates fine.
Are you saying that after it stalls and shuts off, that if you just rotate the key forward to the START position it will only crank - no start. But then turn ignition off and back to START and it fires up?
Have you gone back over and checked the things you just worked on?

Appreciate the slowdown lol, needed that.
so it was suspect that it would stall around 1500, but I had it running in park and it still just died. When I was driving and it died, the tach drops to 0 but I can hear the motor still turning, as if spark or fuel had stopped.
and correct, if I turn the key to start after it shuts off without turning it to the off position prior it will not seem to start (only try for a few seconds before turning key to off)
also interesting note, while using key cycle to pull codes, the light went out in the middle of it reading.cycle the key it comes on, but seems to not be able to finish pulling codes. Also should mention this is after I swapped relay positions, not sure if it relates.

What’s the proper way to remedy that? I tried jumping wires together and terminals no change. Seems to shut off more sporadically when warm if I’m easy on the gas, but once it’s warm it doesn’t seem to have a rhyme or reason. The tachometer drops to 0, and every time it fires it kicks back up if it doesn’t stall.

How is the fuel? have you changed the filter or pulled the sending unit to see if theres a bunch of gunk in the tank? If its stalling while turning hows the power steering pump and fluid?

So I’ve gotten all the old gas out. The filter was a bit dirty judging from the fluid coming out I haven’t replaced it though. I have pulled the sending unit and inside the tank did look good. The filter on the pump did not look too dirty, or clogged or anything. Power steering does leak and does get stiff as well as puts a large larger drawer on the alternator. I have noticed that power steering leak is enough that it leaves a mark on the hood as well as on the ground.

sometimes the attempt to stall only lasts like half a second, and if i try to keep it revved up when it goes to shut off it will pop and buck and jerk but inevitably dies

i was thinking somewhere along lines of something that controls timing. i just wouldnt suspect shaft play to cause intermittent issues.
on that note it wiggles a tiny bit, not enough for a whole tooth or anything though. the wires going to the CAS looks like it got twisted but i dont see any broken connections (this is at where it goes into the dizzy, ill go out and take some videos here so theres a visual)

Considering a higher quality cps and pulling a ecu annd dizzy from a 92. first drive of the day is fine, and drive after wont last a minute before it starts shutting off

Replaced the sensor with a duralast, made me think it was fixed for a bit until just now. Still shuts off, albeit a lot less often now. Would stall after the first drive in a minute or less, made it 2mi this time before it happened (also did shut off as soon as I touched climate control, alt is outputting 13.8)
im lost except to slam a distributor and ignition coil in it because it’s gotta be thermal failure for something that controls fuel or spark in my mind
