Default '93 230,000 Mile XJ w/ original drum brakes- Time to replace them?

Has anyone else never had to replace their rear brakes? I'm just curious about this.

I would make sure they are working. lol Are you going through front brakes alot? I would say as long as they work and look good I would run with them.

Oh, I'm sure you've had to replace them for a long, long time. Eventually, you wear down that squeaky strip and since the noise disappears, you figure they're fine. My Dodge Dakota brake shoes fell apart when I pulled them out. The previous owner had it for 60,000 miles, so there were at least that many on the shoes.

I replace the front brakes every year or so.. I think I've put on new rotors on twice in the last few years...nothing unusual. They seem to work fine. The E brake works well. I got the E brake actuators? replaced once because I didn't have the time to figure it out and do it myself..the shop didn't say anything about the drums. I'm definitely going to change them in the next few weeks.. I guess I'm just curious if anyone else has gone this long.

You may not like what you find. When I took mine in 140k miles the drums were cracked.... very bad and dangerous.

Find it hard to believe they've lasted that long.

It's very doubtful that they are working correctly. And going through front brakes that quickly is a sign of that

just redid the drum brakes on my '93, put on new hardware kits, shoes and had the drums turned. Brakes then started making an awful rubbing noise that drove me crazy. Found that the lever that sits up against the star adjuster was hanging too low and made a groove in the drum, ended up taking it to my mechanic finally and the end result was the cheap shoes. The ones I put on were Centric, my mechanic took em off and put on Bendix, working fine ever since.

Getting ready to replace mine, only the second time in 233,000 miles. The rear ones have far outlasted the front discs, which have been done three or four times.

I had never done a brake job, but looking at the following "how to" on this forum convinced me I should be able to do it:

on average, not offroaded vehical, I see 100k on drum, 30 k on front. And as much as 50 k if all highway. Recently had a car in the shop with 110k on it and original front pads. It was a 08 dodge nitro I believe.
