so I have an update. I bought and installed a new clutch fan and I put a new efan in from a 2000 Cherokee ( figured more blades more air movement, I also know that it might not fix the issues but I tried anyway) I also put the heat blanket stuff around the designated areas. I let it sit in the driveway running in park for an hour and nothing happened. I thought I was out of the woods until I went and drove it today I ended up in another line of cars and the jeep only lasted about a half-hour before it died again. the only thing other than parts that changed was the fact I was in drive instead of park. it might also be worth noting that I just died no stutter no misfire just fell flat on its face. after a bit, I tried to start it and it would just crank and crank and started up for a moment then backfired and died. I waited until the temp gauge reached almost to the left or cold side to try again I think I waited about a half-hour total and it started but almost immediately went to the middle. so I guess I should see if I could make this happen in the driveway and have a voltmeter ready to see if its the crank position sensor. when I'm checking for voltage with a multimeter how should I be checking that?

Do you have a Trouble Code with that (page 6-19 in the manual)?

CPS test procedure on page 6-22.

Alternatively, probe the signal wire on the CPS harness (one is ground, one is power the last is signal) during cranking to see if a signal is coming through (should be 5.0 volts).

Also, with the thing dead rule out fuel or spark problems. See if you have fuel pressure (borrow the fuel pressure kit from AZ, you can keep it for a month) and spark.

OST turn the engine over by hand to look for the signal. The reluctor windows will probably be going by too fast for your multimeter to read them and you'll end up with an average, or maybe like a 2.0 volts.

But I suppose seeing that would say the CkPS is working.

Unless your multimeter has a DVA option.

It's your crank position sensor, I promise.

well, this will be my final update. it very well was the crank sensor I checked the ohms on the one that wasn't Mopar and it was all sorts of messed up. i still held on to my original Mopar one so I swapped it back and I have found one on eBay and just waiting for that to come so I have a spare. the one i got says its a Mopar one fingers crossed! thanks to everyone who helped me diagnose the issue!
