Default Engine cam recommendations?

I'm looking at the possibility of upgrading my stock cam and I'm wondering what others have used as an upgrade over stock and what they were told they would gain and what they actually think they gained.

To add to the complications of the "can of worms" I've opened, I am installing a '95 block into a '97. There are several differences between these years, but namely the cam is different and the vehicle is OBD2 where as the vehicle the engine came from wasn't. I'm thinking of possibly just putting a stock grind for a '97 into the '95 block, but if there is an opprotunity to improve power with the same amount (or maybe a little more) money I may go that route.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I'd go one or two grinds up from stock, usually listed as an rv/ towing cam. They match up with the stock torque converter stalls speeds and since the 4.0 is a low red line/ torque engine, it will help your low end grunt on acceleration.

This is a very general statement:

If you are trying to keep the stock ECM and the State you live in happy: Lift on the cam is always better than duration. Duration gives you the loping idle, it sounds good. But the ECM hates it. On the other hand, the ECM really cant tell how high the valve is lifted.

Increase duration just a little. Increase lift as much as you can, and still run stock springs.

According to what I've researched the stock cam grind up until '95 was 270* on both intake and exhaust with .424" of lift.
'96 and up had 256* intake and 260* exhast durations with .408" lift on intake and .414" lift on exhaust. So looking at that it would seem the older cam was more "agressive", correct?
Lobe seperation in 112* on the older cams and 107* on newer cams....
hmmmmm
