Default 91 cherokee brake problems

Just picked up my first woods toy. 91 jeep Cherokee. The brakes are real hard to mash and only slow it down. It doesn't have the regular brake booster and master cylinder as you would normally see. It has 4 major components the master cylinder, a booster pump and motor, accumulator and pressure switch which has a baseball size canister on it and a pressure modulator that I believe goes to the ABS which is not connected. I guess they cut the sensor wires on front when raising. So where do I start? The parts store can't find what I'm looking for over the phone.

When I first got my 91, I took the manual booster assembly off a parts jeep and installed that, getting rid of that POS bendix 9 abs system. The job was pretty easy, and now brakes work fine.

When you say manual booster, do you mean you went with manual brakes or power, What year and type did you take it off?

This^^

You have the Bendix 9 system. The ABS pump and accumulators also provide the power assist, disabling the ABS also disables your brake boost.
It's a nasty system that's expensive to repair and trouble prone. Get the Master cylinder, vacuum booster and distribution block (IIRC) off a newer XJ and change them out.

Buy yourself a line cutter and a double flaring tool and give yourself plenty of time if / when things go wrong. You'll need some new brake fittings, etc all of which are available at the local parts stores. After the job is done, take your time and properly bleed the system a few times. Check for leaks a few times and then check again. Working on brakes always used to make me nervous too, but just be thorough and check your steps. It's quite easy. There's was a semi helpful thread somewhere when I did mine, I'll try to find it.
