Default 91' Chekokee stuck in 4x4

I have a 1991 Jeep cherokee 4.0 litre 4x4, it sat for a while before I got it,and the 4x4 was never used in several years.
There is some sort of problem with the part time 4x4, for some reason when ever Put it into part time 4x4 it never wants to go back into 4x2. I think this is a common problem, from what ive herd?
Last tome it happened my father fixed it somehow by going in reverse in my driveway? But how do i fix it for good ?
My question is, How do i fix the 4x4 so it wiont get stuck in part time 4x4.
I have a car lift i can use to get under the car,so can someone please tell me what to do ?

Does it shift hard? maybe you just need to loosen up the linkage. it probably seized from not being used. I would start there.

find a nice long dirt road lock it in 4x4 and go for a drive
it just needs to be used
backing up work if it sticks but that is a sign it needs to be used

i agree, when i picked my jeep up the guy hadnt locked in the transfer case in about 5 years that he owned it, when i first engaged it, it was having issues going in and out of 4wd. started using it and it seemed to get smoother.

Try backing up a good distance.

Also change the fluid if you get a chance.

Do you have the vaccum disconnect on the front axle? If you do and it has not been used for quite some time you can expect it to stop working as well. They are notorious for failure due to age.

When my jeep is warming up it makes some sort of vaccum noise, do I have this problem?
