Default 89 XJ-worth it?

Well here I am again!

The white 2 door I was looking at from 95 or 96 got sold out from under me. Disappointed, but there seems to be an abundance of these vehicles around this area.

I put an ad up on craigslist and here is what I received for a response thus far:

Guy has an 89 XJ 4.0L, AW4 trans (has that comfort/power switch), 155K, 4 door, body looks to be in good shape from the pictures-best I've seen so far actually. Problems are that it has a crack in the rear hatch but he has another one for it, there is little pressure on the brake pedal after he gave a brake job all the way around and he seems to think it might need a master cylinder, and the 4 wheel drive does not currently work and he is unsure why. Says a little work was done to the front end and that the front driveshaft is currently removed but he still has it. My guess is probably a new transfer case if it doesn't work at all-or could I be diving into a much bigger headache there than intended?

I'm unsure of what to offer as far as a fair price. He said he wasn't looking to wring every last dollar out of it and my ad was at $500 or lower. Not knowing what it needs is going to be a pain, but this forum looks at though it wouldn't have much issue with guiding me. Any suggestions on a fair price to offer and how to tell what the issues are that he has mentioned so far would be great!

Thanks all,
Nate

Looks clean enough. All the things you mention are all repairable. How did he crack the hatch(bet that's a good story) I would need more specifics in the 4WD thing and what caused him to remove the front driveshaft .

anything that runs at that price and clean is good. its got some weird things, going on, make sure no one has been hacking it up.
