The first thing i check with any XJ not starting properly is CPS. Usually you can just disconnect it then hook it back up and it will work better. Degraded connection is the most common fault with this also.
The CPS connection is located on the Drivers side of the engine. Located at the rear of the valve cover. It is a flat connection with about three prongs in it. Very easy to unplug and replug in. Let me know if this helps also may want to look into a new battery, your Cold Cranking amps on your current battery may be low.

As Stryker says check the CPS. Engine needs a couple things before the computer will allow it to start. First it needs 3 pulses at the correct time from that CPS. Second it needs to be at 300 RPM by the starter. and last it needs 39 pounds of fuel pressure. When all those criteria are met the computer allows spark and power to each injector so that they can spray fuel and ignite it. Besides those factors it needs unobstructed air flow.
When I had my old engine in my Jeep with bad blowby it would not start many times until I realized it was due to an oil soaked air filter acting like a choke and flooding the engine. Yank the air filter out and the little darling would start every time hot or cold.

Anyone who comes on here with a rusted floor you can help with. Anyone with a Stryker problem that comes on here you can help with. Anyone who needs pointers on working on their junk one handed you can help with. None of these above conditions are limited to Renix, and you are the CF Moderator.
renix was the motor that was in jeeps from 87 to 91 i do believe it was still a 4.0 it just was the model before the hi output. so if you jeep is within those years its a renix
