89 XJ 4.0 Auto, I just put my jeep in reverse to back out of a parking space and when I went to pull foward it moved 3 feet then slammed to a stop. From there it wouldnt move foward, I reversed and it was fine from there. Then the same thing happed again same senario, I looked but cant see any binding in the drivetrain. Its weird I cant get it to do it but ocasionaly it will do it only when reversing first then pulling foward. It feels like I hit something it slams stopped so hard. Any clues, I was thinking transfer case chain cause it does slip in reverse under high load in 4h, but not in 4l (weird).

This happened to a guy I was wheeling with last weekend except the other way around, could go forward but would lock the tires up in reverse. He had broken about 3 teeth off of his ring gear in the front diff and they were free floating and binding when he would reverse. Pull diff cover off and check ring and pinion.

Here's a picture of his ring gear once we got back off the trail and took diff cover off. Pretty nasty and we weren't going through anything rough, think we were even on flat ground when it broke.

Thanks I will check out my front end and post my results. I checked the rear and it was good so must be the front. luckily I have a spare.
