Joe, Longtravel1, I learned the fuel pump lesson the same damn hard way on my son's 87. I disconnected the fuel line at the rail and turned the key on and watched fuel squirt across my garage so I thought the pump was good. DUMB ME, for not checking it the right way with a pressure gauge. So: a distributor, CPS, TPS, IAC, 02 Sensor, Temp. Sensor, Intake/Exhaust gasket, MAP Sensor and Fuel Filter, later. I asked my Uncle who is the Manager of the Parts dept. at my hometown Dodge Garage and Dodge Guru and owner of an XJ and ZJ. What a recommended. He said from the symptoms I described it sounded like a fuel pump. I told him what I did to verify it good. He said test it with a pressure gauge. I guarantee you it's the fuel pump.
It was a VERY costly lesson for me. So, I will try my best to keep as many of you guys on the CF as I can from taking the same long costly route. I knew right away when the pump started going bad in my 91 and just swapped the pump and filter as a set. Done deal. It was fixed right away.

Thanks to everyone who has provided information and suggestions about correcting what is appearing to be a fuel delivery problem with my 89 Cherokee.
FYI, I did early on in my attempts to narrow down the problem replace the CPS, but no change.
Thanks again, I will troubleshoot some more using the great advice you have all provided. Wish me luck. I'm determined to get this Cherokee running again; it's been great and very reliable until this sudden glitch happened.

Thanks to everyone who provided tips and input about the puzzling problem with my 89 Cherokee not running. Turns out the fuel pump was apparently worn out, because it was not putting out enough pressure, although it was still pumping. I have installed a new pump (whew, that was a challenge) but it runs great now.
Thanks again,
Joe
Thanks again,
Joe
