My 89 Cherokee (300k) occasionally slips out gear while driving. It seems like it is hopping down to 2nd when this happens. The problem is fixed if I pull over and put it into park. Sometimes shifting into neutral without stopping works as well.
Any suggestions on where to start would be appreciated.

P.S. I have reason to believe the neutral safety switch needs to be replaced. Could this explain these symptoms?
