Default 89 4.0L overheat-timing issue

I have intermittent timing issue...engine overheats, new radiator, water
pump, all gaskets, hoses, dist. cap and rotor, no leaks. What controls the timing, that sensor thing underneath the distributor? Works good when it wants to. How do I clear my computer also, I've heard of 3 days reset, is this right? Is there a quick way to jump
something on the test socket to reset computer? Thanks for thoughts.

my dads computer diagnostic thing has a "clear all codes" option. somewhere you can do it just have to search for it. as far as timing goes i cannot be much help with that.

Hi, Welcome! You have what they call the Renix system. The timing is controlled by the ECU. (It's version of a computer). You can't change it. I guess that business in the dizy has to do with the injectors. Am told that there is no point in resetting those because they don't store anything.
Your overheating is almost certainly the cooling system. Rad, thermostat fan, fan clutch, electric fan, belt, shroud, ...stuff like that. If you post how/when it over heats and what has been replaced somebody here can help. Good luck! D.
