87 steering column swap
I have an 87 XJ with a loose tilt joint in the steering column, also the high beams mechanism is not working, I believe the parts are missing at the turn signal/highbeam switch for the high beams to work. All the other features on the column are working correctly, hazards, turn signals, wipers.
I was thinking about switching out the steering column and was even thinking of going without the tilt if possible, based on all the articles regarding the loose tilt problems in this forum.
Has anyone had good success switching out the steering columns and were there non-tilt columns available for the 87 XJ?
What year columns will work to switch out?
I saw in the forum a writeup on this: A replacement for 1989 XJ column. Direct replacements for automatic, floor shift, tilt column. They are:
1985-1990 Cherokee
1985-1990 Comanche
1985-1990 Wagoneer
Does this sound correct on the replacement years, or are later model columns also useable?

That steering column is the same as in a S10/S15. aka Saginaw Steering column.
Really no need to replace it.
It wobbles because the bolts that attach it to the base are loose.
It also causes the hi/lo to mess up.

Remember that AMC was in financial troubles and it was very common for them to use parts from Ford, Chrysler, and GM to build vehicles.
Thus the reason the column is the same as on a GM.
One of the wildest things I found from an old Gremlin is a SB chevy bellhousing that attaches a Ford transmission.

I have this part which fell out of the lower part of the steering column. Do you know if it is part of the high beam switch?
