Default 87 roof luggage rack

Hey guys

I bought a luggage Roof Rack Trim set off eBay. The chrome trim is in great shape it just needed a good cleaning.

The problem is the black strips that came with it are 3" to short.

Any ideas on where I could find replacements or something that would be substituted for them.

And I have a question

Trims seem to be screwed on the roof ?
mine are loose. I look for the best way to attach them.

I fear water flowing into the car.

Interesting, maybe that is normal. I'm not sure.

I know they are supposed to have a rubber strip under them then they screw into the roof. I've got the holes in my roof but haven't really tried to mount them yet.

How wide and long are they are they?
I want to say that my roof skid strips on my '00 are 3/4" wide and 50 3/4" long.
The roof rack on an '00 is shorter then lets say a '98. I don't know if the roof skid strips on one of those is longer then mine though.
Anyway my thought was if they would work double side tape them on.
Thinking if you do don't use the regular 3M stuff but the VHB 5952 stuff.
Guessing the originals are notched and slid into the chrome part?
I think this is the part number. 55002865
Thing is this is out of my '84 to '86 parts catalog. Also the same part number in my '88 to '90 catalog.
No idea why I don't have an '87 catalog.

The chrome strips are 3/4" x 52.5". The inside channel measures 51", but the strips I have are 48". And the slide in to a channel from the end.

I haven't found any in the junkyards around here. But I'm aways off from body work anyway just trying to gather parts so I have a solid plan when I get there.

I may have found some. The site won't let me put in 87 as the year but the part number matches. I guess I'll give it a try. I've been searching all weekend and finally got a hit.

Keep us informed.

Will you put a rubber under the trims ?

I'll update when they come. I figured if they end up being the same size I'll just cut one up into 3" strips and fill the gap that way.

And yes I'm planning on putting rubber underneath to keep them sealed and not rattling on the metal roof.

Use some sealing product on the ends where the holes protrude through the roof, especially the front corners. Yeah, you can get leaks if you don't. A daub of Urethane caulk or RTV might be a good solution as it's generally flexible and can withstand high heat that might occur on a painted roof in the summer.

For the bottom piece, I would think any black plastic that matches what you have can be spliced in ..unless you're doing a restoration and want new full pieces). Scour ebay. Maybe take a trip to the home center. Or the McMaster Carr catalog. For the center, a trip to a yard with an abundance of old cars would be my suggestion.

I wonder if later station wagons, like late 90's-00's era GM's or even Suburbans used something similar?

Good luck

I'm not so worried about it being perfectly correct, was just hoping to keep it simple.

I'll be junkyard hunting on Thursday. I'm going to see if any other SUVs or wagons have something that would fit. Very hard to find any older xjs up here in the Midwest. Otherwise I'll use the ones I have and maybe modify a splice in.

So I thought I'd update this quick. I haven't found any of the actual rubber strips, but I think I found a suitable solution.

RV molding for covering up screws is pretty close and does fit. It's tight, but with a little lube it slides in just fine.

I bought a 25ft roll on Amazon for $17.
