Sorry I do not know your answer but my radio does something weird too. Some times it will turn on some times with wil not. I get stuck driving without any music. I will turn the jeep off then on while driving and sometimes it will come on.

Start by testing your ground and power. There should be two sources of power, one that maintains voltage when the XJ is off, and one that is only supplied when you turn the key. Power should be red or orange, ground should be black or green. Once you get those working I would fiddle with the other wires... they're low enough voltage that you can experiment and probably not damage anything. Speaker wires come in pairs, so you should have a purple & purple/black wire, a brown & brown/black wire, etc. Just keep plugging wires in until you get sound from a speaker. Your antenna wire can't be mixed up, it's four times bigger than the speaker, power, and ground wires.

What I did was a good hack. I used a computer fan to establish what was the power wires, the ground should be black. So I put the ground on the ground to the fan and the positive to what i assumed were power wires. You'll find the ignition switch hot, the light switch hot, and the constant that way. Once you establish those, use a 9 volt battery to figure out what the other wires are. Take one wire, attach it to the positive or negative of the battery, then brush another wire across the other terminal on the battery. Once you hear sound out of one of the speakers u've established that's the pair for that speaker. Move on to another lonely wire and repeat the process.
