Default 87 overhead console

i got an overhead console from a buddy today. he said it came out of an 87 also. i read how this thing is supposed to hook onto the top but i also read i might need shorter visors since mine go almost all the way to the center? does someone have a picture of their headliner with the console down so i cna make sure i am looking at how to mount this thing properly? my headliner is new and i don't want to screw it up and then not get this console to mount.

the console is fairly long, like 2.5 to 3 feet, and has a spot for glasses, a little sensor looking black dome, some map lights, and another little pop open holder. its also got a crap load of plugs on the top side that i have no idea what they go to.

Okay
Just a little pinprick
There'll be no more "Ahhhhhhh"
But you may feel a little sick...
Never seen a renix with a OHC.
I dont know about the Visors, but that "black dome" is for the keyless entry.

i was wondering about that, an older model but the guy i got it from is very knowledgeable on vehicles so i have no reason to disbelieve him. it doesn't have that little bump cut out on the back fro the bump in the newer cherokees, you know at the back of the console where it mounts, its smooth all hte way down, so it seems like the proper one.

under the headliner, there is going to be a mount for the clip to slide into and on the front, is there already a slot where the screw will mount into?

I have an 89 and it has what looks like a computer chip sticking out of a little piece of plastic, its right in between the visors. I was thinking there might have been an overhead console?

never heard of the visor being too close...i have an early xj one that i was gunna fit but i liked the newer style better ...so basically all you do is... in the front use a self tapping screw to secure it through the hole ...the back use the bracket it came with and then slit a hole in your headliner to fit the back piece...just fun power to the computer because mine didnt have MPG ect...just a compass and temp...i fit a grand Cherokee one in my xj and it fit great no issues

send me a Pm if you need more help

heres a pic of my grand cherokee one i fit

that looks identical to the one i have, mine does have that ridge in the back to go over the bump in the headliner. my jeep does have the bump in the headliner but whoever recovered the liner put alot of padding so you cannot see the bump anymore.

so, just slit the headliner? there is not slot with a hanger for the mounting tab to slide into? the front has the screw that came with it so i figured there would be a matching barrel up there somewhere to screw into.

also, in the back of my 95 cherokee thee was a rear little light that looks just like my center mounted interior light. can i just move my current one back when i put up the console or is the earlier style cherokee not wired for a rear mount interior light?

i used a bracket from an early modle xj...i took out the old dome light in the middle and it literally screwed right in place of the old dome light....and yes you slide it into the cut you make in the headliner and its good...but id suggest getting the bracket in i dont think just the headliner will be enough to support it, also in the front i had to drill a hole to mount it because it was not pre drilled, and in mine where the dome is there was an extra constant power wire in the factory harness that i used so you could turn the map lights on anytime
