Default 87 jeep rear wheel axle seal??s

So the jeep dealer wants 300.00 to replace the right rear wheel axle seal on my 87 jeep. Seems a bit high....How hard is this to do? Looks like I need a slam hammer to get the shaft out, then some type of seal puller tool?? Any tips or pointers? Ill be doing this in the snow tomorrow. My brake is dragging due to the grease getting on the drum and shoes. Probably should do the left as well?
Thanks,
Mike

Donnot pay that crook the $300.00 to replace the axle seal. Do you know what rear axle you have? With an 87 XJ it could be the D35 or the 87 XJ D44 is full floating axle and it is much easier to remove for a seal change. It has no "C" clip so you don't even have to remove the rear diff. cover. If it is the D35 you will have to remove the diff cover to get to the "C" clip. This job is totally do-able right in your garage or driveway.

im thinking if they are charging 300 that it is probally a D30 which takes longer to get the axle out.

No idea what rear it is, its a stock 87 Laredo, 4.0 5 spd Hayes mentions a slam hammer to pull the axle> It was a dealer in the Northern va area, so they probably charge 100+ and hour, It was 138.00 labor plus parts. I bought both seals for 19.00, thought I would give it a try. How do I tell what axle it is?? Which requires the slam hammer??

Thanks,
Mike

Iv'e had 85, 86, 87, and 88 d35 axles. I have yet to run into the c clip version of the d 35. I am aware that they are out there, but have not encountered them! The non c clip axles are straight forward to replace the seal on the tube and the axles are only held on with 4 bolts that are easy to remove once you have removed the brake shoes and hardware. Do yourself a favor and have new bearings pressed on while you have the axles out, parts stores like car quest will remove the old bearings and press your new ones on for a minimal fee.

One more question, if I manage to get the axle out is it the full length with the existing bearings already pressed on, not sure what to expect, i have had the front axles out and that seemed pretty easy and straight forward. Ill give it a shot tomorrow.

Thanks,
Mike

One piece with bearing pressed on. If you decide to replace seals on both sides the two sides are different lengths .

Even if the axles weren't different lengths, it's always a good ideas to keep all parts separated side to side and put them back where you removed them from. Here is a chart that shows what the different rear axle diffs look like. Tell us which one you have and it's a simple procedure from there. Yes, you will have to press the old bearings off and then the new ones on the axle shaft but, even if you have to have a shop do just the pressing you are still saving a ton of cash.

Had the jeep folks do it, 250.00. Too much snow on the ground, ill do the left side when the weather improves, probably check the fronts then as well.
Thanks,
Mike
