87 cherokee valve cover issues

Default 87 cherokee valve cover issues

So i have a 87 cherokee. I hear they had issues with the valve cover design and oil getting into the air box or something. Can i get some more info on this? One of my hoses comes off that goes from the valve cover to the air box and oil gets EVERYWHERE! It gets all over the suspension and all the way back near the rear suspension! I glued it back on with this loc-tite glue made for oil and heat or something we will see how it holds up. But that means all of this oil is going to my air box right?

If i remember correctly, that's your PCV valve or something, and it needs to be cleaned if it's getting oil into the airbox. Not sure how to clean it though.

Its your pc valve. you can replace it for about $10 or $1 buck at the auto parts store. it wll stop the oil problem. Well it did or me anyway. Hope this helps.

Your 87 Cherokee doesn't have a PCV. It is a straight shot to your air box. Basically, your Jeep is recycling the gasses to flow back in through the intake. If you're that concerned about it, figure out a way to re-route the hose directly into the manifold. It's not anything to worry about though. I would just leave it as is, since it will just get a little oil onto the rear portion of your air filter.

My 89, same hose, V cover to air box, same oil on filter, new filter every 6-10 thou miles. From positive crank pressure due to blow by internal to engine, 467000 Km on the engine, run about 1000 mile, 1500km weekly. Oil and filter change every month, uses 1/2 litre between changes, mostly leaking onto ground, plugs run clean.
Anyway I routed the hose into a small filter cannister I got at TSC hardware store ($10). Plastic ABS housing with screw on lid, npt thread input and output for hose barbs, internal metal mesh filter. The oil mist coalesces onto the metal mesh and collects in the cannister. I empty it every oil change (5000 mi,collects about 1/2 cup or less of oil), now the filter is almost dry and I run the filter twice as long. The canister fits at front left corner of the filter housing. Sorry I don't currently have a pic.

in the back of your valvecover their is a small hose that runs to rirect vacuum make sure this is un plugge that is your so called pcv valve

the big hose is to relieve crankcase pressure while driving the pcv valve does this when at idle

I got these but the glue didnt hold up. It was all loose when i got it but i needed the hoses so i took it anyway.
For reference to anyone here they are:
The breather side is NAPA Part #7151367
The emission side is NAPA Part #7151366
Looks like i am going to have to get some PVC pipe glue or epoxy to hold it together in that one spot. I put the arrow where it comes off and blows oil Everywhere!

can you take pics? My 87 is doing this now. I have oil in the middle of my Air filter weeks after i replace it. And so according to the above posts, my 87 cherokee will not have a PC Valve? Im going to the auto store now for something else, Ill look into it.

we do have a so called pcv valve its the small lin sticking up from the center of the valve cover in the rear it goes straight to intke vacuum on in take use carb cleaner to fluh out if to clogged cut off both ends leave enough to run a new rubber line to replace plastic tube make sure nipple on intake is clear to watch for spray coming back out in you face

The only way you have a PCV is if you have the 4 cylinder. Your l6 has something called FCC and is just a straight shot to the air box.

*CCV. Droid and auto-correct don't mix well with Jeep parts.

the small line sticking out of the back of the valve cover is the same thing it removes crank case pressure a idle th big one in front does it when no vacuum is present

im trying to keep this as simple as possible if either one of these are pluged or disconnected oil wii get in air box also if the rings are going or valve seat are shot you will also

If you have a 4.0L jeep, you do not have a "PCV" System. You have a "CCV" system (big difference). Your oil leaking into the airbox problem is caused because the CCV Elbow on the rear of the valve cover (which is not a valve like the PCV system - it just has a small hole) is clogged, or because the hard vacuum lines for the system are clogged. This system being clogged causes oil to blowback through the throttle body and down into your air filter.

So to fix it do this:
1. Remove the hose going to the manifold from the rear of the valve cover - remove the elbow, clean out the hole (throttle body cleaner works very well), and reinstall.
2. Grab a new set of CCV tubes from the dealer - they were like $17 when i picked some up recently - comes with both tubes and the rubber fittings that like to disintegrate and cause the system to fail.
