I have a 1986 2.8v6 with the command trac 4x4 I think the transfer case is a 231. My 5 speed transmission went bad and I have pulled it and saving up for a replacement. Is there another truck (s10, blazer)? That has a better 5 speed I could swap in instead direct bolt in, or almost) This is a daily driver besides the random gravel and muddy roads, is this transmission known to be bad? Any info is helpful I know nothing about jeeps and have some mechanical knowledge but little experience. Thank you for your help and time if there is any more info or pictures needed to help please ask!

 

not sure if you got the peugot trans, but you may be able to put in a ax15,which came with later xjs,
not sure what will work with the v6 as I know nothing about it

Peugeot splits down the middle length wise, nose to tail.

That is an AX5. They are generally good trannys for the 2.8L There is really no substitute unless you can find a T-5 out of an 84. But those are pretty rare

 

Ok Guess I will look for another AX5 for the swap. thank you for your help this thing should be rolling in no time
