just got this 96 cherokee and im changing all the fluids i cracked open the 8.25 rear end and im pretty sure it has limited slip but just wanted to confirm so i get get the right fluid. is this infact limited slip? thanks.

 

Yes it is.

 

Easiest way to tell is jack up the rear end and spin the tires... If the tire you spin is spinning the opposite way of the other side, it's a limited slip

Looks like a limited slip isn't the only thing inside there. That guy's got a lot of water emulsified. Original oil maybe?

 

I was under the opposite impression until I just read that. Mine spin in opposite directions and I thought I had a LSD. So is it an open diff then?

 

Yep. The differential gears have no choice but to spin each other when the pinion is locked in place.

 

I'd suggest u fill with a non-limited slip gear oil. If u have no "chatter" in a tight figure 8 turn, u don't need the limited slip additive. If it does "chatter", add 1/2 tube of additive and try again.....still "chatters" add the rest of the tube. The additive makes the clutches slip more.....the more they slip, the less of a traction enhanced diff u have. If the clutches slip easily, u basically have an open diff, performance wise.

 

What kind of LSD is that? It looks nothing like the LSD in my 97.

 

ALWAYS add a friction modifier to an axle that has limited slip installed.

ya that sure was some funky oil in there got it all cleaned out with brake cleaner looks way better.

 

thats strange do you have a pic of yours? the guy i bought it from said he replaced the rear end. is yours a dana 35 or chysler 8.25?

One thing the photo tells you is that the fluid was never changed often enough or all that rust wouldn't be there.

I change mine anytime I'm in deep water/mud or when I change oil/filter its cheap and I have drain plugs on my covers, so easy to do.
