As suggested replace the whole axle with a J/Y axle. If it is a 8.25 you will have a strong axle that will last you for years, and no this is not a common problem.

Definitely get a JY axle much much cheaper then having one rebuilt...Plus you will have a spare you can leanr to rebuild your own on if ya want and build up a nice rear axle..

Is it a high mileage jeep? I wonder how all the bearings went bad? Or maybe the garage is guessing and adding on to get more labor $$.

The overall condition is OK. And I am not familiar with differential/axle work. I guess I may have to pay the big money for it. Thanks for all the information.

My 94 rear is "howling" and I need to do something about it soon. Anybody got any ideas if its the pinion bearing or maybe the carrier bearings. What goes first on these rears? There is no grinding and I just had someone change the gear oil. When I first start out driving it its not loud but gets progressively louder as it warms up. Its a Cryco 8.25...Tj

well i definately would consider what u are planning to use the jeep for..if it is an offroad rig then i wouldnt bother rebuilding the rear i would try to upgrade to a dana 44 or something similar....however if u are planning on just dd the jeep then 700 isnt bad to replace all the bearings and seals....thats about what it would cost for me to do it and i seem to be a lot cheaper then most shops in my area

I just bought a Chryco 8.25 from the JY or $270 with a 1 year parts warranty. $750 is a slap in the pants to rebuild it. Besides it's literally only 14 bolts+break lines+a little prying on the DS/yolk area and wham bam axle is laying on the ground. Plus it gives you an excuse to get drunk in the driveway. Atleast that's what I told my ole' lady. hahaha.

Thought I might add this. The axle it self was only 225. I paid 45 for a 1 year parts warranty.

heres a few ?'s if not done already. hav u checked the fluid yourself? does the rear cover hav that crappy rubber plug? not sure if u can get a cover with screw kind. take the cover off and of course let it drain, then clean with brake cleaner and look for any damage. if u cant find any, put cover back on with new gasket stuff, then fill up with royal purple and see if that helps. mine clunked every time, from when i stopped and started moving. now it dont.

hopefully you have considered just a differential fluid change. The 90w-140 is pricy but you need only 2 qts. You haul a trailer?

Hi William,
Don't expect a answer to your question, as the thread you posted to is about 12 years old!

Yep it happens, welcome to the forum, btw!
